The main processes in Ayurveda are shodan (cleansing), shaman (palliation), rasayana (rejuvenating medications) and satvajaya (treatment for mental wellness) according to some ancient treatises. Major texts classify the treatments as palliative and purificatory.
Palliative treatments are used for reducing the three doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) and consist of sneha karma (use of oily substances), sweda karma (fomentation), exercises, exposure to sun, exposure to fresh air, medications to increase digestion and medications for removal of toxins from the body.
Purification treatments are known as Panchakarma (five-pronged treatment) for the removal of accumulated toxins and doshas from the body and these are vamana (induced vomiting), virechana (induced purgation), vasti (enema), nasya (nasal medication) and rakta mokshana (blood-letting).
